This chewy and delicious snack with is very simple to make with or without a bread machine. I adapted this recipe from China Sichuan Food. Only a few ingredients are needed to make this sweet and savory, super yummy snack. I just love the sweet-salty brown sugar filling. It's very addictive and hard to stop at just one or two pieces!
You may make it by hand if you do not have a bread machine. Just add all the dough ingredients into a large bowl, knead for about 8 mins until you get a smooth dough, cover and let it rise for about 45 mins until the dough has doubled in size.
Ingredients:
Dough:
All-purpose flour 300 g
Water 165 ml
Salt 1/4 tsp
Yeast 1 tsp
Filling:
Dark brown sugar 1/4 cup
All-purpose flour 2 Tbsp
Pinch of salt
Oil for frying
Powdered sugar for dusting
Place all the ingredients for the dough into the pan of the bread machine. Run the dough mode according to the manufacturer's instructions of your bread machine.
Once the dough is completed and the dough has doubled in size, remove from the pan and divide the dough into 14 equal pieces (about 32 g each).
Roll each piece into a ball.
Flatten with a rolling pin, place about 1 to 1.5 tsp of the brown sugar filling in the middle. Gather the edges and seal well. Shape into a small disc.
Heat some oil in a frying pan. I used about 4 Tbsps of oil but you may use less if you prefer. I wanted my bread to turn out more like a crispy chewy doughnut.
Over medium heat, fry each side of the bread till golden brown.
Dust with powdered sugar and enjoy!
Snack time!
